Recycling Standards

Valorization of waste LCDs : LCDVal project is aimed at finding most economical and eco-friendly way to recover Indium from LCD screens

  • The Pan European WEEE Forum has laid down a coherent, continental and comprehensive set of technical requirements with respect to WEEE recycling called the ‘WEEELABEX standards’ or normative documents .
  • Main characteristics:
    • The standards are normative (as opposed to descriptive) requirements and concern all steps in the chain, including collection and preparation for re-use.
    • The standards cover all 10 WEEE categories.
    • The requirements related to collection, logistics and treatment activities are supposed to be implemented by all the WEEELABEX systems and those who have contracted to do so.
    • The WEEELABEX normative documents in the process of being translated into formal CENELEC EN standards.
  • Following the introduction of the WEEELABEX standards in April 2011, twenty-six waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) compliance schemes (including an Irish Compliance Scheme) joined together in Prague on 17 April 2013 to set up the WEEELABEX organisation. This standard has a subsection which directly addresses the recycling of LCD displays. Some examples of the relevant sections are outlined below:
  • Requiring separation of different types of flat panel display. This requirement is more stringent then that laid down in the WEEE Directive.
  • LCD De-pollution guidelines and monitoring: A simplified mass balance for the subsequent steps in the treatment process of LCDs lamps is required. The critical [Hg] concentration in the individual fractions is specified. This requirement is more stringent then that laid down in the WEEE Directive.
  • The treatment of flat panel displays shall consider the fractions and components thereof, and the specific requirements for: mercury, fluorescent coatings, and indium tin oxide (ITO). This requirement is more stringent then that laid down in the WEEE Directive.
  • Thus creates an even more pressure driver for the recovery of rare earths from waste LCD displays.
